Stop. Ask… Why Does This Matter?

Have you heard the term: consciously incompetent? It’s when you feel you have two left feet taking a new dance class, uncertain starting a new position or learning the clicks and links of the latest social media platform. It’s that clunky stage learning a new skill when you know what to do or how to do it, but your mental or physical circuitry isn’t fully on board. But, hurray! With a little more practice, you’ll move to consciously competent.

I see my clients who are at this stage, putting their best foot forward but still squirming in their new skin. When that squirm shows up, I know it’s time to take a break from learning tactics and skills and ask this key question:

What’s at the heart of why you are presenting?

Not the content, story, data and call to action, but rather what is at the core of why you are speaking? Here’s their top answer: To Connect!

Simon Sinek, known for his groundbreaking book, Start with Why, says:

“We are drawn to leaders and organizations that are good at communicating what they believe. Their ability to make us feel like we belong, to make us feel special, safe and not alone is part of what gives them the ability to inspire us.”

Want to inspire your audience?

First, tap into your own inspiration. Fine-tuning your communication skills is a worthwhile endeavor. But while pursuing excellence, remember to stop and ask, “Why does this matter”? For in this answer lies the connection you seek!
